TCA Arshag Dickranian Armenian School was founded in 1981 by The Tekeyan Cultural Association, Inc. The aims of the founders were to educate Armenian children using the California State Curriculum, teach them the Armenian language and culture and prepare them for a productive life in both Armenian and American societies.
The school is named after a prominent Armenian-American philanthropist, Mr. Arshag Dickranian, whose generous contributions have enhanced the mission and the activities of numerous organizations in Southern California, including his namesake, Arshag Dickranian Armenian School in Hollywood.
On the Inauguration Day of September 10, 1981, there were 44 students enrolled from kindergarten through 4th grade. By adding a class each year, TCA Arshag Dickranian School has enjoyed a steady population growth. The school has also expanded its premises over the years and the two most notable expansions are the new building with its various facilities and the new basketball field.
The school’s mission is to prepare students for success in a changing and challenging world by offering them a strong value-centered education, instituting a diverse and comprehensive educational program, offering a well-planned curriculum and bringing forth the student’s Armenian identity. In June 1990, the school presented its first High School Graduating Class of 16 students. The proud graduates of the school have formed an Alumni Association to support their Alma Mater.
During 2004 – 2005, the school underwent a major expansion project adding prekindergarten and kindergarten facilities with an age-appropriate playground, a new two story wing containing a high school department, the Walter & Laurel Karabian Hall, a subterranean garage for 110 cars and an athletic playground.
The school celebrated its 30th Anniversary during the 2010 – 2011 scholastic year with a series of events dedicated to this important milestone, amongst which were student programs, the 30th Anniversary Banquet and the special Cultural Program. In March 2012, the school added its first Walk-a-thon to its annual events at which time students raised over $10,000 towards scholarship funds. Most of the students who have graduated from Arshag Dickranian School are enrolled in colleges and universities throughout the state of California.
TCA Arshag Dickranian School was accredited by The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in year 2012. After serving the school for 30 years, Principal Vartkes Kourouyan retired in summer of 2012. The School Board of Trustees assigned Dr. Maral Yeranossian as the school’s Principal for the 2012 – 2013 academic year and in August 2013, Dr. Manoug Seraydarian was appointed as the school’s new Principal.
